Habitat & Population Connectivity

CEG used environmental mapping, animal behavior analyses, and simulation modeling to assess Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) movements and habitat connectivity between Montana, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

We analyzed location and movement information for Greater sage-grouse to quantify which landscape features facilitate or impede grouse movements. We also mapped historical, contemporary, and future potential habitat connectivity. We assessed connectivity stability by assessing the structural connectivity of sagebrush-associated vegetation, and creating a timeseries of maps to identify where vegetation connections have been lost among populations, and where there are opportunities to restore connected natural areas.
